Your RV brings any number of modern comforts to the campsite, not the least of which is the bathroom. But you’ll have to clean it carefully to ensure it remains a positive addition, and it isn’t quite the same as cleaning the bathroom at home. We here at Allan Dale Trailers & RVs want to help you stay on top of any chores so you can relax, so we’ve put together some tips on cleaning your RV bathroom. Toilet

Before The Trip

Before you leave for your vacation, you should check the seal on the toilet to make sure it isn’t hardening or cracked. If it’s hardening, use plumber’s grease to reseal it, but if it’s cracked it may need replacing. This seal prevents leakage and nasty smells, so you don’t want to leave without an intact one.

During The Trip

RV toilets are more sensitive than residential-style ones, so you can’t use your typical cleaners or brushes. Check your owner’s manual for recommended products or find RV-specific ones online. You also can’t use your preferred toilet paper, so stick to one-ply or RV-specific rolls.

Blackwater Tank

You’re going to need to find a balance between emptying the black water tank too soon and too late. Too soon and it becomes a much more difficult chore, but too late and you might have backups and smells. You should empty it at about ⅔ to ¾ full.

To empty it, you’ll have to find the dump station. Connect the tank valve to the dump station with a sewer hose and let it empty. Double check that you closed the valve before disconnecting the hose, then add some RV-specific chemicals to the tank to sanitize it and kill odors.

Shower

Soap and water can build up in the shower over time and lead to problems. Wipe down the walls and shower head with a squeegee or cloth after every shower to avoid this. You should also empty the gray water tank regularly to avoid backups through the shower drain.

Deep Cleaning

Every so often, you’ll need to do a deep clean of the whole bathroom. Make sure you’re stocked up with RV cleaning products and supplies, and that you have material-specific supplies to avoid damaging surfaces. Again, your RV’s owner’s manual will include recommended products. You can also use common cleaning products like a diluted bleach solution or a vinegar and water solution.

Grab a towel or rag, dampen it with the cleaning solution, and clean the various surfaces. You should also spot clean throughout the vacation to prevent major buildup.
