Size Matters

When you’re actually looking for the right stock trailer, you’ll want to start by thinking about size. Of course, you need to be able to fit all your livestock comfortably, and preferably, in one trip. This will require a little math. Think about the types of animals you’ll be transporting, how much room an individual needs, and what your options are. Of course, a stock trailer can only get so big, so be open to the idea of needing to make more than one trip.

Size also comes in the form of weight. Firstly, the stock trailer will come with weight limits you’ll need to consider when looking at your options. However, this is also relevant to the tow vehicle. Your tow vehicle is only capable of safely hauling a certain amount of weight, known as the gross combined weight rating. This is set by the manufacturer and will tell you the upper limit for the amount of weight your vehicle can handle. This includes all cargo, trailers and passengers. If there’s a risk that getting a big stock trailer could overload your tow vehicle, then look for something smaller and more lightweight. 

Safety

Staying within size boundaries is as much about safety as it is efficiency. An overloaded tow vehicle is more likely to lose control, which becomes a hazard for the livestock, the driver, and other commuters on the road. However, following weight limits isn’t the only way to stay safe. You’ll also want to perform thorough inspections on the cargo trailer, including before you buy the product. You don’t want to invest in something that’ll become a bigger hassle than it’s worth. 

Also, make sure you’re using your hitch properly. This means using all safety chains and mechanisms, as well as performing one final inspection before hitting the road.
